The French Lop has held the same name since the mid 1800s which dates this breed
in their present form. Many confuse the Lop breeds particularly the two largest
breeds, the French Lop and the English Lop, initially. They share a club, the
Lop Rabbit Club of America, but beyond that they
are very distinct rabbits. It is believed that the French Lop was developed from crossing the English Lop and the Flemish Giant, resulting in a slightly larger body and less ear while maintaining a distinct look unlike either parent breed. The French Lop of course has the lop ears but they are much smaller and horseshoe" shaped than the English Lop. The French Lop ears should be an inch and a half or so beyond the jaw. Further the French Lop is larger, with more body at maturity. Bucks should be 10 pounds or more and does 11 pounds or more. Like many of the heavy breeds, this is a six class breed that allows for junior, intermediate and senior classes for both bucks and does. The large size of the adults can mean they make respectable fryers for those wishing to have meat rabbits from those not of quality to show. For the pet person with room for a larger breed, the lopped ears can be an attraction. This is a personable breed in many ways that is not so small and easy to "lose" as the small breeds but they do take more feed and room. The French Lop is a fairly low maintenance breed that is relatively easy to find. Like other lop eared rabbits however they can be bothered by mites. Although straight eared rabbits can also have problems, it is more likely to be seen than with lop eared breeds that often aren't inspected in the ear as often. The occasional use of ivomectin can help keep mites at bay as well as other parasites, but it does not touch coccidia, which need a different medication. |
